Vines

Vines are great plants to grow in the garden. They are relatively low maintenance, twine up trees, walls, fences and other plants in the garden.

Our popular vine plants are ideal for creating living walls. We have many climbing vine plants that offer color in the spring, summer, and fall.

Types of Vines

  • Climbing
  • Creeping
  • Twining

Climbing vines with small root systems that grow upward usually with the help of supports like near building structures or telephone poles. Because of this, these types of vines can be used on arbors, columns, pergolas, walls, fences, and anywhere else you might need them to grow vertically.

Below are some of our recommendations for climbing vines.

  • Carolina Jessamine
  • Dutchman’s Pipe
  • Clematis

Creeping vines will often send out rhizomes (underground stems) that will produce new shoots at the nodes (the point where the leaves meet the stem). Creepers are close cousins of groundcovers, however, they often trail more than they creep.

  • Golden Oregano
  • Morning Glory
  • Ivy

Twining, or wrapping vines, wrap themselves around support structures or grow upward by spiraling along with their support structure.

Twining vines are particularly useful plant choices for home gardeners because they are inexpensive, easy to grow, easy to propagate, come in a wide variety of shapes, sizes and colors, provide ample amounts of vertical interest for any landscape design style, and require no pruning.

These are some of our favorites:

  • Hops
  • Wisteria
  • Jasmine
  • Honeyscuckle
