Lawn & Garden

Plant care is just as important as picking out the right plants. Head over to the plant care shed for all of your lawn and garden needs. Every day of the week you can visit plant care and speak to one of our plant care specialists!

Texas Lawn Care

Spring Lawn Care time is here. Why not get the job done with Texan-owned brands. When you buy local you support your local gardeners. We suggest using products from MicroLife, The Ground Up and Nature’s Way to ensure your lawn is immaculate for Spring!

MicroLife is a Houston-born company that produces organic fertilizers, pest control products, and inoculates. Both The Ground Up and Nature’s Way are Texan-owned companies that produce the highest quality soils and amendments for your Texas garden.

Read below for our guide to a healthy Spring lawn.

Control Weeds

Even though your grass is not actively growing, there may be annual
cool-season weeds that have sprouted up. It is important to mow these weeds before they flower and go to seed, this will drastically reduce the number of your turfgrass weeds in the future. In February/March, apply corn gluten meal as a pre-emergent herbicide to reduce the number of warm-season weeds in your turf.

Add Organic Matter

Adding compost may be the best thing you could do for your
lawn. Spread a rich humus based compost to benefit soil structure and increase water
holding capacity. The addition of this broken down matter also increases your lawn’s soil biology while providing vital nutrients to the turf. This can be done in February/March; we recommend:
a. Nature’s Way ‘Leaf Mold Compost’- distributed at a rate of about ¼ inch over
the entire lawn.
b. MicroLife ‘Humates Plus’- (Granule) distributed at a rate of 5-10 pounds per
1,000 square feet.

Insect Control

For those of you who want to protect your lawn against grubs, chinch
bugs, and other harmful insects before damage is done; applying beneficial nematodes in early March can protect your lawn for the entire spring season.

Fertilize

The rule of thumb is your lawn is ready to be fertilized
after your second mowing; this shows your grass is actively growing. This usually occurs
in March, depending on the weather. Use a fertilizer with high nitrogen to promote
healthy new green growth. MicroLife 6-2-4 is an all organic fertilizer inoculated with
billions of bacteria and fungi to feed healthy soil ecology and encourage a hardier, more
self-sufficient lawn. This is the best fertilizer for your lawn and soil, distributed at a rate
of 20 pounds per 1,000 square feet.

Composting Essentials

Composter Tumblers

How many times have you finished dinner and wished you had a dedicated spot to dump your food scraps? We’re here to help! Our compost tumblers provide a compact, enclosed space where you can let your compost pile grow. e easy to install, easy to maintain, and provide years of use!

Composting is always best when done outdoors if possible, to avoid odors and pests. A composter tumbler makes the whole process easier and more efficient.

They’re also 30% off this weekend ( 04/22 – 04/ 24) only!

Compost Tea

This is one type of Texas tea you’re going to want to pass along to your garden. We pride ourselves on making fresh Compost Tea that our gardeners swear by.

Compost tea is best described as a solution that is created by mixing compost and water. It is not an all-organic product, but rather it is made from organic materials. This mixture of water and compost allows the microorganisms to grow and multiply in the compost tea blend. Vegetation grows much faster when using these microbes in your garden because they increase the number of nutrients and feed the plants even while they are still growing.

Our Buchanan’s blend is made by mixing water, compost, molasses, seaweed and other organic additives. Try it out today by stopping by the Plant Care shed!

Let’s Talk About Mulch

As summer approaches and the temperatures climb, you’ll need to think about your mulch. Mulch is often not on the top of your list of things to do when planning a garden, but it should be. Here are some great benefits of using mulch during the summer time that will convince you!

  • Helps Retain Moisture- Mulch helps alleviate water loss through evaporation. This effectively helps cut down on watering, and keeps your soil from drying out before you can get out in the garden to give your plants a drink of water.
  • Acts as a Barrier- Mulch protects from weeds and the heat of the sun! Think of it as a protective layer. Applying mulch makes it harder for weeds to sprout through and disrupt the flow of your garden. It also acts as insulation for your plants!
  • Fills the Gaps– Another reason we love mulch is for the simple fact that it can help elevate the look of your beds. There’s no debate that summer can sometimes limit your options as far as plant selections go. Add mulch to bare spots to help with the aesthetic aspect that comes with summer beds!
