Lawn & Garden

Plant care is just as important as picking out the right plants. Head over to the plant care shed for all of your lawn and garden needs. Every day of the week you can visit plant care and speak to one of our plant care specialists!

Texas Lawn Care

Get your lawn in shape with Texan-owned brands. When you buy local you support your local gardeners. We suggest using products from MicroLife, The Ground Up and Nature’s Way to ensure your lawn is immaculate!

MicroLife is a Houston-born company that produces organic fertilizers, pest control products, and inoculates. Both The Ground Up and Nature’s Way are Texan-owned companies that produce the highest quality soils and amendments for your Texas garden.

Read below for our guide to a healthy lawn.

Control Weeds

Annual seasonal weeds are a problem in Texas lawns. It is important to mow these weeds before they flower and go to seed, this will drastically reduce the number of your turfgrass weeds in the future. Another solution is to apply corn gluten meal in February and September as a pre-emergent herbicide as it will inhibit these weeds from germinating.

Add Organic Matter

Adding compost may be the best thing you could do for your
lawn. Spread a rich humus-based compost to benefit soil structure and increase water-holding capacity. The addition of this broken-down matter also increases your lawn’s soil biology while providing vital nutrients to the turf. We recommend:
a. Heirloom Soils ‘Leaf Mold Compost’- distributed at a rate of about ¼ inch over the entire lawn.
b. MicroLife ‘Humates Plus’- (Granule) distributed at a rate of 5-10 pounds per 1,000 square feet.

Insect Control

For those of you who want to protect your lawn against grubs, chinch bugs, and other harmful insects before damage is done; applying beneficial nematodes stops the problem before it becomes one.

Fertilize

The rule of thumb is your lawn is ready to be fertilized after your second mowing; this shows your grass is actively growing. This usually occurs in March, depending on the weather. Use a fertilizer with high nitrogen to promote healthy new green growth. MicroLife 6-2-4 is an all-organic fertilizer inoculated with billions of bacteria and fungi to feed healthy soil ecology and encourage a hardier, more self-sufficient lawn. This is the best fertilizer for your lawn and soil, distributed at a rate of 20 pounds per 1,000 square feet.

Composter Tumblers

How many times have you finished dinner and wished you had a dedicated spot to dump your food scraps? We’re here to help! Our compost tumblers provide a compact, enclosed space where you can let your compost pile grow. e easy to install, easy to maintain, and provide years of use!

Composting is always best when done outdoors, if possible, to avoid odors and pests. A composter tumbler makes the whole process easier and more efficient.

Let’s Talk About Mulch

Mulch is often not on the top of your list of things to do when planning a garden, but it should be. Here are some great benefits of using mulch that will convince you!

  • Helps Retain Moisture- Mulch helps alleviate water loss through evaporation. This effectively helps cut down on watering and keeps your soil from drying out.
  • Acts as a Barrier- Mulch protects from weeds, heat and cold temperatures. Applying mulch makes it harder for weeds to sprout through and disrupt the flow of your garden. It also acts as insulation for your plants!
  • Fills the Gaps– Another reason we love mulch is the simple fact that it can help elevate the look of your beds.

Lawn Care

Preparing your garden for new flowers, herbs, and veggies? Here are a few tips to keep your plants at their best during the season.

Fertilizer – To give your lawn a boost, we recommended Microlife 6-2-4 which is a general-use fertilizer for most plants, or Microlife 8-4-6 for lawns, herbs, and veggie gardens.

Weeds – To prevent weeds try corn gluten meal. It is a natural recommendation that creates a layer in the soil that seeds can’t germinate through.

Compost – Lawns and garden beds can greatly benefit from a top dressing of bacterial-based composts — try Foxfarm Soil Conditioner! It is the easiest to apply, adds organic materials to the soil, and helps improve soil aeration and moisture retention.
