Shrubs
Shrubs for all seasons
Shrubs are the heart of a landscape and are essential when framing your outdoor space. They come in many shapes, textures, and sizes. From creating effective privacy screens to a profusion of seasonal color. In our Houston climate, there is a suitable shrub for virtually every space whether sun or shade. Let’s us help you create the perfect landscape.
Camellias
Beautiful Winter Blooms!
A favorite amongst southern gardeners, loved for their rose like blooms and dark glossy foliage.
These evergreen flowering shrubs are available in an array of pinks, reds and white. We have received both Japonica and Sasanqua. Japonicas are best for shadier gardens, while Sasanqua’s can tolerate a little more sunlight. Both still should be protected from the summer Texas afternoon sun.

Native Shrubs
We’ve put together a list of native shrubs that not only tolerate our Houston heat, but also are quite hardy in winter. Explore our top picks for Houston.
Flowering Shrubs
Shrubs that flower at different times of the year add seasonal interest to the landscape. Popular shrubs for the Houston area include Azalea, Camellia, Gardenia, Hydrangea, Loropetalum, and Indian Hawthorn to name a few.
The Azalea is a woody evergreen shrub that grows best in acidic and well-draining soil. Azaleas prefer full shade to partial shade. They are an excellent choice for gardeners who want blooms and beautiful foliage. Azaleas are part the Rhododendron genus, which means all azaleas are Rhododendrons, but the reverse is not always true.

Fertilizer
Buchanan’s carries fertilizers that are suited for specific needs of all types of shrubs. Many flowering shrubs such as azaleas, camellias and gardenias prefer an acidic fertilizer. We carry several brands including MicroLife and Nutri Star Plant Food by Nelson Plant Food.
Compost
We carry several types of compost that are perfect for adding organic matter to your garden beds. Leaf mold compost nourishes the soil and promotes healthy shrubs.
Mulch
Nothing protects your shrubs like mulch. They’ll keep moisture in the soil during the hot summer months and provide a blanket in winter from hard freezes. They add organic matter to the soil as the mulch slowly breaks down over time.
