Cyclamen
Add some beauty to your home with our cool season favorite – cyclamen. These pretty annuals are just the right amount of color to brighten up your garden beds and containers. Their scented blooms in a variety of colors are a must have during the holiday season!
Cyclamen have long-stalked, roundish leaves that are often described as ballerina skirts. The plants grow from a short underground stem, called a tuber, and have no stem aboveground. Caring for a cyclamen is a breeze! These low maintenance flowers are pest resistant and can be indoor or outdoor plants since they are native to Europe and the Mediterranean and tolerant of cold climates. As for sun requirements, shade to dapple morning sunlight is best, while indoors we recommend placing them in bright light near a window.
Paperwhite bulbs
Bring on the winter blooms! If you long for spring daffodils during the bleak days of winter, paperwhites are a close relative.
Paperwhites grow so fast, it is a thrill to watch their daily progress from bulb to flower. They are best grown indoors from late fall through late winter, so depending on how often you plant them, you can have paperwhites blooming all winter long! Their fragrance is divine and can add a nice holiday touch to your living space. When planted indoors, choose a container with good drainage. Add several inches of growing mix and settle the bulbs in place. Keep the top quarter of the bulb above the soil surface and water sparingly until the bulbs have developed roots and are growing well.
Keep in mind paperwhites are sensitive to cold temperatures, so don’t let the bulbs freeze! If you plan to store them for later, place them in a ventilated plastic bag in a dark cool area to keep the bulbs from drying out. Cardinal Christmas
Cardinal birds are one of the icons of winter. Each year during this time of year, they seasonally migrate to warmer parts of the world. As Christmas approaches, these birds make their way northward, presumably stopping along the way to visit some friends. We like to think of them as symbols of renewal and new beginnings wearing their colorful attire on their journeys back home for holiday celebrations.
Cardinals are also typically associated with faith, hope, and love. These are the guiding themes behind our ‘Cardinal Christmas’ story. Nestled between the branches of the Christmas tree, you’ll find the bright red cardinal in various scenes.
